CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Mike Wilson "So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but yous are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, congenital upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself every bit the cornerstone." ~ Ephesians 2:19-22

While returning from a trip several weeks agone, my married woman and I took a spur-of-the-moment side trip to the Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux. It'southward a Trappist monastery in Vina, California we had stumbled across 15 years earlier.

While archeologists have thousands of years of history nigh who had previously used the state, specific to the monastery, it started in the mid-1800s with a land grant leading to construction of the world's largest winery. The abbey came onto the state in 1955.

As we learned about this, nosotros also learned about its "sacred stones." Taken from a 12th Century monastery in Kingdom of spain, 10,000 stones each with a mark identifying the detail stone stonemason who carved that cake were painstakingly dismantled, and in 1930 wound up abandoned in San Francisco's Gilt Gate Park.

The stones laid there until they were noticed by the monastery'southward abbot who fabricated a deal for one,300 of those stones.

That'south where my wife and I outset saw them; laid out on a warehouse floor where those one-time stones gave shape to something new.

So, on our recent return visit, we made information technology a point to spend time in that at present rebuilt church; built from those 800 year old stones.

It truly is a sacred infinite, and in that rich and peace-filled quiet space, my spirit wondered; those rock masons…in their wildest imaginings…could they e'er take envisioned about where that church then would be today?

Still there we were, basking in the loving presence of God now but as those monks turned to God's loving presence more than 800 years ago.

And from hither can nosotros wrap our minds effectually all of the earthly history in that span? All of the large events (including pandemics) and who knows how many small occasions brought before God; all of that that coming out every bit prayers and pleas and petitions along with the promises and the praises?

I hope this image is comforting as we've now reached a turning betoken with the end of COVID masking requirements and while we wait to meet where post pandemic leads united states of america.Â

To add to that comforting image is this; of all the stones brought from the 800-year-old monastery, only 1,300 were used in building the new version?

Those were used for the arches and corners, the distinctive parts of the church. The other 8,700 stones are "new" and form the more ordinary apartment wall sections. While they replicate the old stones they were made and built into the overall design to encounter current twenty-four hours earthquake needs.

Our teachable moment is that equally we make our way to the post-pandemic church, with its shape and grade built on the pre-pandemic church, it volition look a lot like the pre-pandemic church, all the same we must remain alert to coming together post-pandemic needs.

And as the church'southward purpose ever has been, always is, and always will exist to create a holy dwelling place for our loving God, we practice this with Jesus Christ as the church's cornerstone.

That higher up Bible phrases reminds u.s. that Jesus brought people together in means that nobody would take dared to imagine; people who as 1 would have agreed with each other that it was a long, foreign trip for them to be together.

With Christ as our cornerstone, with the distinguishing marks of His unconditional love, His boundless grace, His steadfast compassion, and His ever present hope; we tin use these distinctive and timeless cornerstones to bring about new life into the new days ahead.
